Day was educated at Clonmel Endowed School and Trinity College, Dublin 〔“Who was Who” 1897-1990 London, A & C Black, 1991 ISBN 0-7136-3457-X〕 and ordained in 1840. He was the incumbent of St Matthias, Dublin from 1843 to 1868 when he became Dean of Limerick.〔"A New History of Ireland” by Theodore William Moody, F. X.
